February 23, 2022Born into slavery, Harris’s industry enabled him to purchase his freedom from his master, Major James Taylor, and later to free his wife, brother, and father.
As a youth, Matt Harris' master leased him to Dr. Christopher Graham, and Harris learned about horses and earned good tips as he cared for the horses and carriages at the famous Harrodsburg Springs resort in the 1840s.
A skilled carpenter, builder, and brickmaker, Harris opened a brick kiln, built small houses, and sold them for a profit.
His business grew to include the construction of commercial and residential buildings, including 483 Beaumont Ave. and 670 Cane Run St. As a successful businessman, Harris contributed to public improvements, including a $500 donation to Bacon College.
